My Favourite Web Sites
The following links point to some of my favourite web sites - I hope you find something here that interests you.
Although I work in IT I appreciate that for many people a computer is just a necessary evil which they have to endure in order to do their job.
Consequently you have to be patient when dealing with users who sometimes think their computer is being deliberately difficult.
However here is a site dedicated to the difficulties of using computers and the difficulties caused by using computers. There is also a nice section aimed at keeping all so-called
"professional" computer users humble:
Computer Stupidities
Some of the companies I have worked for originated in the days when the Web belonged to the Military or Academic institutions and don't have web sites
Of those who do have one, they are largely uninteresting corporate sites. However here is a slightly different web site from one of my previous careers:
Baptist Union of Scotland
Linux seems to be one of those things people either love or hate. But even if you
aren't looking for an alternative to your present operating system, getting to grips with Linux can be a great way about learning more about a number of areas of computing.
Redhat is one of the most popular Linux distributions, while Mandrake Linux is among one of the easiest distributions for those new to Linux to install:
Redhat Linux and Mandrake Linux
Ever wished you could do something really creative? Here is a web site which encourages you to do just that:
Simply Painting
First they boldly went where no man had gone before.
Then they boldly went again - only faster.
Then they boldly stayed where they were - and hoped that the aliens would come and visit them.
Then they boldly went further than anyone had gone before - and boldly made their way home again.
Now they have boldly gone hardly anywhere at all.
If none of that made any sense - where have you been for the past 30-odd years? Head for the next site at maximum warp
and learn all about the continuing mission of the Startrek saga to dominate the known universe:
The official Startrek Web Site
The reality of space exploration and alien encounters is not quite as dramatic as the one painted by Startrek. However
the reality is also that anyone who wants to get involved can. To find out how, and how your computer can do something useful for
scientific research when you're not using it yourself, visit:
The SETI@home Project
Finally a list of my favourite web sites would not be complete without a link to one dedicated to my favourite food.
Ambrosia may have been the food of the gods, but mere mortals like myself would rather have chocolate:
The Cadbury Chocolate Company
